Tips on how to use TikTok for a Hair Salon

TikTok is a great new way for hair salons to join in on current trends and advertise their services online. Being relatively new (launching as TikTok in 2018), the app is continuously growing and is available in 150 countries and 75 different languages. Its algorithm works by showing users content they seem most interested in, resulting in no user having the same “For You Page” (FYP). It has turned into a marketing and advertising haven, although not many businesses have taken advantage of the benefits the video platform can provide. How to use TikTok for a hair salon?

Similar to Instagram Stories (or Highlights) you can use TikTok to post tutorial videos, before and after (or even during) videos, and reviews. The only difference is, the chances of your video going viral are a lot higher on TikTok than any other app! On top of this, more people who are located in your region will see it.

TikTok is the perfect place for you to express your personality as a salon, and show your customers your creative side. The HubSpot social media team even says that it is “leaking with brand opportunities!” Most TikTok users range between the ages of 16 and 24, so you will want to play to their interests. Transformation videos are going viral among this audience, so the app is a great place to showcase the fantastic things you can do to people’s hair.

An excellent example of this is @alyssaharedoeshair, who has over ten thousand followers. She posts videos of the process she goes through with her clients. Another account that is catering to the interests of Gen Z is @jaymz.masters, who is known for his ‘rainbow hair’ videos. You can watch him dye people’s hair all sorts of bright colours and users seem to love it!

How can you take advantage of TikTok for a hair salon?

1. Hashtags

Hashtag your videos! Make sure to use specific keywords to make it easy for others to find you. As a hair salon, these are some examples of hashtags to use:

#hairdresser

#hairstylist

#hairsalon

Or you can try location specific hashtags like:

#newyorkhairstylist

#londonhairdresser

Quick Tip for finding local hashtags:

For hashtags, type to see what’s popular, first type the name of “your city”, then “hairdresser/hairsalon/hairstylist/haircolour etc.

>> see what’s most popular when you start typing the hashtag and experiment!

The great thing about TikTok and hashtags are, that once a user likes/searches for a video with the same hashtags as you, your videos have a higher chance of appearing on their FYP!

2. Be creative!

You have from 15 to 60 seconds to show off your personality and draw people to your brand. Stray away from heavily commercial-style productions, and showcase your authenticity and down-to-earth brand, being human is key! Many people have trust issues and stick to the same hair stylist. If someone from your city finds you on TikTokand starts following you, they may very well be encouraged to come get their haircut at your salon, which gives you the chance of making a customer for life (as well as their friends who follow them on TikTok.)

3. Join in on trends

TikTok trends and challenges are a great way to get involved in the community and demonstrate to your viewers that you are ready to meet them halfway and learn about their interests. An example of this is TikTok dances, which are extremely popular, and also fun to do! Why not get your team together to learn and record the newest dance and show your viewers how much fun you are!

4. User-Generated Content

TikTok is not as expensive to market on as other platforms, however, there are still opportunities for free advertising by posting curated content. You can ask your customers to post reviews or videos of their hair transformation using cool transitions (the hair flip is a current favourite) and tag your hair salon and stylist to get some free promotion! Remember, people trust other people more than brands – so make sure to get some positive feedback!

People who use TikTok aged between 16-20 may become a customer now or in years to come. Social media isn’t going anywhere with new apps  becoming popular every couple of years. TikTok is the newest phenomenon so start experimenting with authentic content from the salon. There’s not a lot to lose, give it a try!
